SWIMMING > UNLEASHED FORCE
This installation is a collaboration with the designers Wimke Dekker and Franca Ullrich.
AN ILLEGITIMATE MAESTRO
To confront human to their actions on nature, we constructed a space which makes humans experience the energy of a wave. Humans try to control natural forces, and nature gives it back to us (global warming and all that goes with). Thus we wanted humans to feel small and vulnerable, for once.
PLASTIC AND BRICKS
We reproduced a natural element (waterfall) across industrial materials. The plastic is the symbol of pollution and materializes the strength of the wind. The bricks are a reference to the building and try to tame the plastic.
It gives the illusion of being protected and safe, but once you enter you become aware of the dominating power of nature. Humans can walk « in » the water and seat under the waterfall. It encourages them to feel fragile, becoming an instrument of nature rather than its maestro.
2> WIND MAPPING
Before we started any design process, we created wind cartography at the rooftop we were working on. We choose or that several tools :
a piece of plastic, to study its movements (intensity and direction)
a book, to observe until which page the wind will read
a sound recorder, to analyze the relationship between intensity and sound level
We recorded the data with two technics: videos (descriptive) and drawings (subjective).
